Well, I was thinking about RP for a while today, and I had an idea. It's nothing past the idea stage, but I wanted to see what people thought about it. Anyway, here's the idea. One game, divided into two groups, either white hats and black hats, or just rival factions/groups, whatever. Instead of having limited NPC's that always lose (from my admittedly *very* limited RP experience), the game would be against other people, having to think and outwit a human opponent. Characters would be pretty open (and the occasional defection might be arranged), not a lot of direct rules or commands from the GM (which would probably be myself, whatever) except when the GM would need to tell people to lose (sorry, but I can't see any other way to make it work) So, what do you all think? I'd love to hear some feedback from everyone. Thanks for your time. Sounds like chess...only harder. I like it |

Ooh I like
Ground rules would have to be very carefully thought out however. For example, can characters be killed, wounded etc? What would stop one team ambushing and posting as out of action all the players from the other team. That sort of thing. I think I would definitely want to be involved in this if you manage to get it off the ground. Have done something similar in an rp where the moderators played the alien baddies. However had to get the other characters to agree to the degree of injury etc that they would allow. ------------------ Dulce et decorum est pro terra mori |

quote: Why thank you
quote: Yeah, that's one of the reasons I reconsidered posting the idea. First off, no character dies unless the person leaves the RP, wants to start again with a new character, or is a Trancer (if, a *very* large if we decide to let Trancer's have that power). It would be up to the character. Second, it would be agreed at the beginning by all characters entering the RP that there would be no unfair advantages, no "Oh, we were around the corner, so we stunned all the other team and shot them" Everyone would be expected to be realistic, and would know that they can't win all the time, it would be more like 50%, and sometimes they would lose for longer periods of time. That's really the only way I could see to be fair. Also, everyone would have to accept, that once in a while, the GM will tell you to lose. That person might not tell the winning side they are going to win, but once in a while, you would have to give it up.
quote: Thanks, I hope I can get it running too. It would be about three weeks, if I decide to go ahead with everything. Any other questions??? ------------------ Lucky to be Magniac mate to the lovely, wonderful, beautiful, sweet, caring, nice and kind Amanda777 and Niet Empire mate to the strong, beautiful, and genetically perfect JadziaDax |

I played in an RP based in message boards with a similar set-up that ultimately failed. It is difficult to make things fair for everyone without hindering creativity. I would love to see something like this in the Andromeda universe, well thoughtout and implimented, and I am willing to help to accomplish that, but it will be an uphill battle! |

Okay, before I invest anymore effort into planning this game, I have to know how many people are interested. So, if you think you would like to start out this game, please say so. If you would like to know anything, or make any suggestions, *please* do. Thank you very much. MP |

Let me repeat Brit's caution here: the ground-rules need to be veeery carefully laid out before you proceed. [Among other things, btw, this means that whatever scenario you're employing has to tolerate repeated non-lethal losses by PCs, something which most scenarios can't take.] Furthermore, everyone who participates needs to be aware of the need to be flexible, and needs to be willing to accept a loss gracefully... and that ain't easy. That being said... one of the highlights of my gaming career was at a convention my senior year when I and a fellow GM contrived a party-versus-party showdown: two PCs, two GMs, one battle royale. [It was even funnier 'cause all the PCs were playing monsters -- and all were on the same side! -- but that's not relevant here.] The thrill of getting it to work was incomparable. |
