"Con"-ventional Wisdom?

It was mentioned by Dylanite that attendees were not allowed to tape any of the procedings. Is there a specific reason why this is so? Some sort of legal reason involing the guests perhaps? I'm imagining that a recording could be sold, and that would open the door to all sorts of hassles with royalies and getting actor's and writer's permission.
It would really be cool if these events could be streamed over the web using webcams. Reading the reports are great fun, but I just wish I could see what's going on too.

C-Span broadcasts tons of meetings and conventions-they just go there and turn the cameras on and let you experience it as if you were there. Is there anyway to convince con organizers to open the events up for some non text media coverage?

Many thanks to all of you who've taken the time to post what goes on at the cons you attend. It is very much appreciated.

My sense is that, aside from the valid concerns you raise, the guests are simply not going to be as open if they know they're being recorded for posterity.

But that's just my own personal feeling.
