Keith Hamilton Cobb On Tyr's Development

Keith Hamilton Cobb (Tyr Anasazi) said recently that he's aware that wiring stories for his character can be difficult, but he is eager for Tyr to grow.

"The writers have had a difficult time writing for Tyr because he can be such an extreme character," he told Cult Times Magazine. "To give them their due they are exploring new avenues and introducing deeper facets but, as an actor, you want to do Season five in Season One. It's quite a struggle for me to remember that not everything can be revealed immediately and that there are layers to deconstruct as we go along. So it's slow but, on the whole things are progressing in broadly the direction in which I'd like them to go."

The actor illustrated his point by referring to season two's 'The Prince'. "That was a very strong episode," he said. "In fact, from my perspective, it was one of the strongest episodes thus far. Usually my take is that Tyr's relationship and his interaction with other characters are not as much in the fore as I feel they could be, but in 'The Prince' I loved the exploration of the possibility of Dylan and Tyr as regents to the throne. I really got into how they responded to the gargantuan task of deciding 'How best to be king?'

"I also relished the opportunity to get immersed in all the court intrigue. The episode is rife with politics and intrigue - the backbone of Nietzschean philosophy. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to expand upon Tyr's development."

Cobb has a preference for episodes that focus on character rather than action. "It's not that I don't enjoy the rough and tumble episodes, but much of the nuance of performance goes out the window to make room for the more physical aspects," he explained. "Those things are intrinsic to the character and are a lot of fun, but I prefer to show Tyr as something other than 'Action Man'."

And what does the future hold for Tyr? "I approach each new script with a sense of excitement and wonder what we'll learn about the characters. I'm not entirely sure where we are going to go with the storylines this year, but there are some interesting dynamics and some intriguing situations to unfold before it's all said and done," said Cobb.

More from Keith Hamilton Cobb can be found in issue #79 of Cult Times Magazine, on newsstands now. Thanks go out to Shaun for this!

Trust in The Keith. The Keith is good.

It's good to see that he is keeping constant vigilance on the development of Tyr.

Hmmm...sounds like Tyr is committing suicide....OK, very un-Nietcheanm but consider KHC's attitude...

He wants Tyr to be deep and multifaceted, and prefers character to action.

That just contradicts Kevin's Sorbo take on Tyr, who should be doing more beefcake & action type of stuff.

Well, we'll see how long it lasts.

I find it telling that we have ANOTHER Andromeda cast member who has no idea where the show is going!

I think they would probebly understand a little better if they stick in a Hercules tape!

I think Keith should be an Executive Producer.

I'd jsut as soon not, they need less exec producers not more, IMO. They already seem ot have to many hands in the till as it is now.

The problem isn't the number of hands, it's whose hands they are. And I do agree with Kosh that Keith would be a frellin' lot better at providing those hands than some of the people doing it currently.

I think it's the number of hands, who's the hands are AND what those hands bring to the table with them.

I can't help wonder what difference it would have made if Kevin Sorbo's Hercules experience was characterized by a show runner who prided himself on the lack of a show bible, and a revolving door of writers who not only had no clue about continuity but didn't particularly care about it.

I'm not excusing some of the dismissive sounding things he's said, just wondering aloud how different it might have been if his previous associations had been with the likes of Robert Wolfe, not Rob Tapert.

*sigh*

Even more importantly, what are those hands doing under the table?
