Slipstream Rules-Guidelines
      2001/03/25 06:41 PM

Greetings!

Below are the Rules/Guidelines that will eventually become part of the main section of the board where the FAQ, etc. are listed. We're posting them here so you all can get a look at them before they are put into effect. They have been discussed in depth by the moderators and administrators, so changes (if any) in them will be minor. Of course, we'll listen to your feedback and take it into consideration.

Andi

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Administrators and Moderators are responsible for:
A. Moving threads into the correct forum.
B. Locking, Editing or Deleting threads containing spam, trolling or flaming.
1. Spamming
Spam is defined as posting the same thing repeatedly in the same thread, forum or in all forums. It is also defined as posting excessively in a short time with posts that normally are only one or two sentences or words. In some cases, it is even posting too many threads. Usually, a person will only post two or three threads in one forum or no more then 5 or 6 threads overall on a board in a single day. Spamming will result in a warning or, in extreme cases, the spammer will be banned or have their post count reduced.
2. Flaming
Do not insult people on the board. You're free to post opposing comments about someone's opinion, but never negative comments about another poster. In general, a flame can be defined as being aimed at one particular person or group of persons, and of an insulting or malicious nature. Using strong language in relation to someone else is not permitted. Flames are also counted as such if they are directed at people involved in creating the show. It is okay to criticize their work, but please treat them with respect.
A Moderator will edit the message containing the flame to include a warning. If the flame is of an especially strong nature, that could strongly disrupt the peace of the Slipstreambbs, the Moderator can remove it at his/her discretion, provided he/she retains a copy of the flame for future reference.
If you are flamed, do not respond in kind. Self-defense is no excuse to flame and your return flames will be dealt with just as severely. Instead, you should either not react or post a message saying this was uncalled for, but never respond by flaming. Always contact a Moderator or Administrator. If you are a Moderator or Administrator, and are flamed, do not react. It is for other Moderators or Administrators to handle. Flaming will result in a warning or, in extreme cases the flamer will be banned.
3. Trolling
Trolling is defined as posting remarks intended to anger another poster and or start an argument or flame war. Trolling will be edited or deleted at the Moderator's or Administrator's discretion. Do not respond to trolling aimed at you. Contact an Administrator or Moderator or both. Trolling will result in a warning or, in extreme cases, the troll will be banned.
Other Rules
Multiple User Names
Multiple user names will not be permitted. The use of multiple user names has been an on going problem at the Trekkbbs, including members being banned for pretending to be someone else. You may not register a username that will lead others to believe you are a memeber of the cast of Andromeda, or anyone assosiated with the show. Multiple user names registered before this document is distributed may be retained, no more will be permitted after this document is released. Anyone registering more then one user name after distribution is subject to a warning or being banned.
Moderators and Administrators should set an example for the rest of the BBS. They should never flame anyone, and always try to keep their temper. In case a Moderator or Administrator does not do this, other Moderators or Administrators have a right and a duty to warn fellow Moderators and Administrators, just as they would do with regular members.
When posting about episodes, be sure to include spoiler warnings. As a rule of thumb, you should post spoiler warnings for anything less then two years old. If you post a new thread, indicate there are spoilers in the thread subject. Never include a spoiler in your thread subject. You can post the title of the episode in the subject, but never plot info, if it falls under one of the episodes for which spoiler restrictions apply. If you have spoilers in a post, include a spoiler warning in the post and a few blank lines.
Once a thread reaches a hundred posts or, due to excessively long posts inside a thread, takes a long time to load, a Moderator or Administrator can close the thread and start a Part 2 if applicable.
Plagiarism/Pirating/Privacy
Please do not post material on the board you do not have a right to post. This includes, but is not limited to, ICQ logs, E-mail, pictures, *made-up* news stories, or other private details. You may only post/link to pictures from your own site or if you have permission from the web site to link directly from them. Also do not post links to R or X-rated sites. This will also result in a warning, and the deletion of the offending material.
Do not allow your account to be used by someone else. Impersonating someone or allowing someone to use your account will lead to a warning.
Bans
Multiple warnings will lead to a one-day ban. If in the past month you had already received a one-day ban and you qualify for another one-day ban, this will change into a one-week ban. If in the past three months you had already received a one-week ban and you qualify for another one-week ban, this will change into a one-month ban. If, in the past year, you had already received a one-month ban and you qualify for another one-month ban, this will change into a permanet ban.
In extreme cases, the Slipstreambbs retains the right to ban trolls without going through the one day, two week, one month, process.
Bans should be announced in a thread in the Announcements forum, as well as per email, to the member in question.
Signature Lines
We ask that you try to limit your signature lines to a maximum of 8-10 lines (single-spaced please) - and ask you to remember how long signatures add to the scroll rate of other members. Also, photos in your signatures should be kept to a maximum of 15KB for the same reason. And last but not least, please try to limit your signatures to once per thread.
Posting/Linking of Photos in Messages
We'd like to ask you that, if you post any pictures, you either upload them to your own webspace, or have the permission of the person whose site the picture is on to link directly to their server. Most web site owners pay a monthly fee for bandwidth transfer, and don't appreciate their sites being linked to without their permission. Also, even if you do save the picture and put it on your own web site or server to link to, it is common web site courtesy to ask permission from the webmaster to use the photo.
What is mentioned in the Signature Lines section also pertains to the size of the photos if you post them in a message- please keep them small - pictures larger than 45-50KB really slow a thread down when it loads. Remember, some people still have older computers and do not have the high speed access that some of us enjoy.
Fair enough. The rules are there for everyone to see and comply with. Now we just have to make sure eveyone sees them. Maybe once they go into effect, a full population email can be sent to all members letting them know. And some people with long sigs might appreciate an early warning so they can start paring now.
I think the problems have been arising due to a lack of established guidelines and I'm personally very glad to see them. Thanks.
BTW, the only rank that one should be allowed to spam under is Klingon.
Ogami pointed out to me, that instead of :
it should say post, instead of post/link.
icq is a program that works something like AOL instant messenger. You can talk to someone realtime, and I assume the program saves the conversation somewhere, as I have seen logs reprinted.
What it means is, if you have a conversation with someone, e-mail, icq, aim or yahoo instant messanger, whatever form it takes, you must have all parties consent before you can post the message, or any copy of the conversation, at slipstream.
Read the guidelines. It doesn't say anything about anyone being exempt. That has just been an excuse to spam, until now. No excuses. Remember, Christian is having to pay for all that bandwidth that is being used. That's why we have these rules/guidelines now. We all knew things were going to have to change as the membership got larger, and this is how we had to make the changes.
Hi Hygea. I think your idea might be a bit too drastic.
But... being a Than at the moment, I expect flyswatters and windshields to descend on me for saying this... maybe the evolution levels should not be set in stone.
Why not mix things up a bit, change the numbers for attaining certain levels, change their order, from time to time.
Going out on a limb here, but as long as you count and total up posts, people will naturally compete for the "honor" of top poster. Or getting into the "Top 50."
I see a windshield coming.
I think this is a GREAT idea, to prevent people from excessive posting just to "evolve" and also to make it more fun, i.e., for me it is more fun to "suddenly" become a different species rather than know what the next step will be.
(Not that the Slipstream isn't already fun!)
I think the species should be one of the things you can edit in the profile, sort of like a signature. That, and I'm angry that I forgot "they boards are hollow, filled with hundreds of Magog, enough of us to eat everyone else on the bbs" back when I was one of them. I'd rather be a wookie pimp than a chinbeard, and EnTranced'll probably hate it when he evolves to whatever's above Purple Pixie (my money's on Black Hole Demon). Maybe they can get it so that more posts unlock other species rather than forcing evolution (I don't wanna be a purple pixie). You couldn't allow them to type in whatever they want, because that means they could type in 'staff writer' or 'high guard moderator' as their species (then again, it wouldn't be in gold, and the impersonators would get in trouble).
