BBS version upgraded
      #216 - 2001/08/20 12:05 AM

We've just upgraded the BBS from version 5.45c to 5.47e. I think I've transfered all the features from the old version, but if there's anything that you're missing or if there's a bug that wasn't there before, please let me know by posting in this thread.

Personally, I haven't noticed any bugs.... but I haven't noticed anything different either. Is there any place I can find a listing of changes/upgrades/tweakes between the two versions?

Thank you in advance,
Rovinski

How I wish I'd known that page even existed. I spent over an hour yesterday trying to find out what exactly had been changed in the new version by searching on the UBB support forums.

I think it will be back eventually, but we need a bigger/badder CPU for the server.

I still think we ought to set up one of those donation systems at Amazon like I mentioned in a server-related thread in Miscellaneous sometime within the last month or so... even if only a few people were to contribute -- and several expressed interest in just that thread -- it could be a tremendous help towards getting that new server, supplementing the money from the ads.

Christian, having spent the past 4 days attempting to find and load the tech support pages for my ISP, and having them mess up my web site worse than it was ... and being totally frustrated and not finding answers .... I sympathize!

FWIW - the pages load faster for me. But maybe that's my ISP actually getting their act together.

Possible bug? I cannot open the ads in a separate window with my keyboard command any longer. I have to click and hold on the ad and wait for the pop-up menu. I like the ad in a separate window as I can keep reading SS while the ad loads.

That's unrelated to the board software upgrade. Which ads, and which types of ads, show up is determined by UGO's adserver. Although they all (including the new kind) open in a new window just fine for me with Shift+Click, perhaps it's the type of ad which is causing your difficulties.

Um, Christian?

On my computer, all of those little yellow triangles that indicate new posts in a thread are dark. They have been since I first got here a few days ago.

On TrekBBS, they work fine, but not here.

Plus, I'm not seeing the mulitcolor new message triangles on the main page. Is that normal? (I run Earthlink 5.05, BTW if it matters)

Thanks.

There've been a few threads in Misc in the past, from people who've had that same problem. Unfortunately they've since dropped off the edge into the Black Hole of the Misc Archives, so my explanations in those are now inaccessible. Basically, the colors of those triangle icons is determined by cookies stored on your computer, updated each time you visit http://www.slipstreambbs.com/ , which keep track of the last time you were there. But sometimes the cookies don't properly record the times, and so then the triangles' colors are inaccurate. Try clearing your cookies/cache (which can be done at the preferences page too), and change your Slipstream preferences to remember your username and password. That's usually taken care of the problem.

or unlees you are accessing this board through a firewall or proxy server

That doesn't affect the locally-stored cookies. It might result in the thread pages being cached at the proxy, in which case you can get new versions of them to load before the proxy-cached versions have timed out, by appending a "?x" to the address of each thread you load (replacing the 'x' with any random combination of alphanumeric characters, a different one for each subsequent time you load a particular thread). But that wouldn't affect the main forums-listings page or the forums' thread-listings pages, since those are dynamically generated... the individual thread pages are static, so they can be cached, but the others aren't. So that wouldn't affect what he's asking about. And also, he doesn't have this problem at TrekBBS, which he would if it was a proxy-related issue.

Yeah, but they were all dark the first time I came here. Plus, my cookie file is pretty clean, seeing that I just cleaned it not to long ago.

I'll do it again, though, just to make sure.

Edit: I just cleared the cookies, and the tabs are still dark.

That's probably because you just went to the main page several times in a row, so the forum ones would all be in the dark 'no new posts since previous visit to the main page' mode. If you refresh the main page and then don't go to it for a little bit, and then try the forums, hopefully they'll be working

Nope! First time I've come in several hours. New posts, no bright yellow "new post" triangles.

That's alright, though. It really doesn't matter.
