where would you build the new cw fleet? vederan Nightsider If you had the power to decide where would you begin to build ships for the cw. What cw members would be good for shipbuilding Gaheris Human Sinti, perhaps. Always nice to have your yards close to the R&D types. Really not many choices among the other members we know about - they're mostly lightweights ... unless you want to put it in a Sabra-Jaguar system, in which case you're far more trusting than I. Besides, it could be seen as a reward for Sinti's faithfulness - they were the first to sign up, after all - and even wergild for the (admittedly accidental) whacking of Hohne. Orpheus Nietzschean Machen Alpha, once one of the leading makers of AI's in the post-Fall world (see ASU and ATH), would be a major source for AEs (if they can overcome their prejudices. Alas, we don't know if Sparboth IV (where Rommie was created by the Shining Path Institute) is one of the few remaining indepencent perseid colonies, or if it's technology was swallowed in the massive flight back to Ugroth. Hmm... I guess I should add Ugroth alongside the Than and other major centers of power that Dylan had been pointedly and assiduously ignoring in his quest to restore the CW. hadrian1 Jeath well if Tera Zed took the nerve to rejoin the CW, I would build the fleet their becasue its hard to get to by slipstream. Also antoerh shipyard at Mobeius right by the new High Guard Academy. ryleo23 Magog well, the Than aren't Commonwealth members, but they are allies.I would pick San-Ska-Re. Lusankya Human Wanting to spread them out so no 1 attack can destroy the yards.. Sinti (Best bet for weapons and defnese R&D) San-Ska-Ra (eventually.. Than have the 2nd largest fleet in the known worlds) Tarazed (Well established and stockpiled academy, nicely secret and well stocked with munitions) Mobeius (Military Academy) Sabra-Jaguar system. (maybe just a wee little one. 3rd largest fleet in the known worlds) Curufea Pyrian Thaan appear ideal to me - empire, hive government type, industrial base, and hopefully a caste structure. Nothing works better than a a worker caste specifically bred for the job. Bandit Jeath Well, for political reasons i would build a shipyard either in deep space, or in an uninhabited system, and if you will read the section on slipstream at allsystems, its no big deal gow far away the thing is... tennyson Vedran Bandit let me ask you this then, where are you going to get the raw materials and infrastructure as well as the people and machines to build your shipyards let alone your machines? There are reasons why people place shipyards near industrial centers like planets. They provide the rescources and skilled workers needed to convert a lump of carbon and metals into a ship. By building in deep space or in an uninhabited system you cause your costs to rise tremendously as you have to ferry in everything from someplace else including the raw materials needed to build the ship in the first place and without a planet with its forces around to defend you there is no garantee that your shipyards will survive long enough to build a single ship. andromedanut Perseid I would choose Sinti. Mobius Nietzschean How big of fleet are we talking here? For political reason I'd say it would be best to spread out the building program to as many CW worlds as can do the job. This will produce good will and economic growth. You may have to live with the problems that come with beginners trying to build something over their capacity. Eugenic Nightsider I agree with Morpheus AnneZo Vedran My vote would go to Sinti, for all of the reasons listed above. I'd also make sure that representatives of every species in the Commonwealth had both workers and planners on the project, to foster inter-species cooperation. The last place I'd build a fleet would be inside the radius of influence of any Niet Pride. Because, you know, fool me once.... Delvo2 Nietzschean Well the Thann are out, despite their stability and the pre-existence of working shipyars of their own, because they're not Commonwealth... unless you contract them for it as a business, which is different from doing it yourself and not what I'd do if I had any other choices. The trouble with the "hard to get to" reasoning for Tarazed is that the logistics demand that lots of people be able to get in and out of your shipyards. Any time a major operation her on Earth sets up ion a fairly isolated place, for example, the first thing they have to do is beef up the roads to make the place easier to get to and from. Sinti is probably the easiest place to get to, since it's a Corscant-like supercity and thus must depend on other planets for its food. Another factor counterindicating putting the facility someplace hard to get to is the simple fact that the traffic would increase a lot, thus wearing a path through slipstream and eliminating the reason you went there in the first place. To the argument for putting the shipyards on a Perseid planet because they should have a good supply of researchers and engineers: Let's remember Mobius. It was run for centuries by a dictator who had been an architect and wove that theme into his dictatorial style; their populace should also have a high percentage of people quite well educated in such things. And giving them something big to focus their energies on like that while also increasing the inbound cash flow should also help restabilize and integrate what is otherwise one of the Commonwealth's (at least recently historically) more unstable and isolated elements. Rangie Nietzschean I'd build the fleet right by the Drago-Kazov Pride homeworld. Think about it: It would be the last place they'd look for it. Of course, this is probably why they don't put me in charge of shipbuilding... If I where the master (Captain) of the Andromeda Ascendant, looking to reestablish the Commonwealth, In light of the happenings at guard station 92196, and the wealth of technical data there in, the very first thing I would have done, after debriefing Beka, and Harper as to their individual experience and capabilities, I would have, using Beka's, knowledge, gone asteroid mining, concentrating on the most valuable minerals. With the currency obtained from the mining expedition, I would have had Beka, buy several old asteroid, processing / mining ships, in different places. I would then have had Harper build, three more ships avatars, based on Rommie though not so anatomically correct, download a copy of Rommie's neuro-net matrix into each, to captain the mining ships. All the time I was doing this I would have avoided contact with the outside world as not to draw too much unwanted attention to my very existence. I then would have outfitted each of the mining ships, with the latest in selfreplicating, nano, micro, and macro automatons. In order so that in stages, first nano tech, and robot manufacturing facilities, followed by, ever increasing in size, ship building facilities could be built by the self expanding robotic work force. Now this approach would require a great deal of resources, in the form of raw materials, which could be seen to by placing the mining ships, in widely disperse, large asteroid fields, in deep space as far from normal shipping lanes, as possible. The first priority of said ships would be to build, facilities that could not only build more mining ships, but hundreds of small robotic fighter craft to protect the facility. Then each of the ship captains would replicate themselves and send out the newly built mining ships, to set up equally out of the way facilities in equally unknown areas of space. Each facility having dispatched three to five other mining ships, would then concentrate on enlarging their own capacity until they could start to build major inter stellar combatants. Having done so, in three to five years, a major sized fleet, along with all the necessary logistic support facilities, could have been amassed without anyone being any the wiser. Who says one man can't rebuild the common wealth, if he knows is tech, and has dedicated AI's, working for him, he most assuredly can. So I guess that Bandit had it right after all, he just didn't have all the bits and pieces. Sparky:: [This message has been edited by EMSparks (edited June
