What are ECM Generators?

I heard them mentioned in another thread. What exactly are ECM Generators?

ECM stands for Electronic - counter - measures

Since most of the Andromeda universe uses smart buellets, which are controlled by inciy computers, in theory the ECM generators High Guard people would wear would screw up the smart buellet computers and make them miss them. The term would also cover any other form on Andromeda's main defences, including Chaff.

Today, ECM is one of the hot new miliary things that people want to develop. Basically today it involves people using 'dummy' missiles and things to make missiles miss there target. Right now we mainly use CM (Counter measures) which are nothing more than hundreds of little pieces of foil and flares, but they do the trick.

Actually the first electronic countermeasures systems were developed in World War 2 to protect bombers that were going in over Germany. Then, like any other piece of hardware that proves to be effective a race began to develop electronic counter countermeasures (ECCM) and electronic countermeasures to those in a neverending race to make the more effective device.Ever since the 1960s most First World nations have been carring some type of electronic countermeasures pod or internal system on thier aircraft like the American ALQ-131 ecm pod or internal systems like the Belgians and the Israelis have on thier F-16s. Dedicated Electronic warfare aircraft have been a staple of air combat since the 1970s with the American EA-6B Prowler and now out of service EF-111 Raven and other nations use a host of similarly modified aircraft.
The ECM meshs and generators for personal use are just the logical culmination of this process, where individual bullets are smarter than today's missiles you have to have some way to make them miss or your infantry will be slaughtered. The High Guard jammers we see on Andromeda could use any of a wide variety of deception, barrage or other jamming techniques. If they are powerful enough they could even burnout the sensors in the smart bullet itself, rendering it unguided in midflight.

Well on a smaller scale, with smart bullets, they confuse them, kinda like in the Matrix where they use that EMP to knock out the robots, or in Dark angel the thing that sends the US into a third world contry. On ships, they can confuse missles and avoid your self getting hit
